Overview

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide self-directed recovery-oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work involves implementing community-based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work is undertaken in a range of community contexts such as community based non-government organisations; home based outreach; centre-based programs; respite care; residential services, rehabilitation programs; clinical settings; or supporting people in employment. Work is carried out autonomously under the broad guidance of other practitioners and professionals.

Entry Requirements

ACOS requires that all students:

  • Are over the age of 18.
  • Complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, Digital [LLND] assessment to demonstrate that they have the required level of LLND skills required by the course.
  • Have a reasonable level of fitness to manage the
    physical aspects of working in mental health settings, including maintaining an active and safe
    environment, and supporting clients in daily activities when required.
  • Are physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy to respond appropriately and sensitively to the diverse needs, behaviours, and wellbeing of clients experiencing mental health challenges.

 

Further Information – International Students

This course is available to international students who are able to provide evidence that they:

  • Meet the English proficiency requirements with a valid IELTS Academic score of 6.0 with no score below 5.5 in any band, or PTE Academic score of 47 with no score of 39 in each section.
  • Are suitable for entry via an interview (online or in person) as part of the course selection process.
  • It is a condition of entry that upon acceptance, students provide evidence of having an Australian Student Visa [subclass 500].

 

Additional Work Placement requirements

  • Possess a Police check (which is required for placement)
  • Possess a NDIS worker check
  • Updated Vaccination Record
  • Have a reasonable level of fitness to manage the physical demands of providing care and support to individuals experiencing mental health challenges, which may include maintaining a safe environment, engaging in therapeutic activities, and responding to behavioural or emotional needs
  • Are physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy to respond appropriately, compassionately, and professionally to the needs, comfort, and overall wellbeing of clients with mental health conditions
